Here are 12 key developments in AI during Feb 2024 that caught my attention:
1. Groq's chat interface based on its custom AI silicon went viral. They showed how an open source model runs way faster on their LPU for inference-related applications.
2. OpenAI launches Sora, a text-to-video AI model. It expands the creative possibilities in AI-generated content.
3. The Vesuvius Challenge 2023 demonstrates AI's capability to decipher ancient texts. About 2000 years ago, a volcanic eruption buried an ancient library of papyrus scrolls now known as the Herculaneum Papyri. People deciphered this scroll. It discusses music, food, and how to enjoy life’s pleasures.
4. Reddit signs a $60M AI content licensing agreement with Google. It signifies the growing role of AI in content generation.
5. Nvidia introduced Chat with RTX, a locally running AI chatbot. It showcases on-device AI processing advancements.
6. Lag-Llama is introduced as the first open-source model for time series forecasting.
7. Google rebrands its AI offering to Gemini. Users started reporting errors along with responses that are flat out incorrect. These screenshots went viral. They also released the Gemma AI model for open-source developers.
8. Dolma provides a 3-trillion token open corpus for AI pretraining.
9. Meta's Code Llama AI programming tool closes the gap with GPT-4. The aim here is to democratize AI development tools for coding efficiency.
10. Elon Musk sues OpenAI for straying from their non-profit mission.
11. Figure AI raises $675M to build and scale humanoid robots. Notable investors include Jeff Bezos, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Nvidia.
12. The Government of India has asked AI platforms to seek approval for deploying under-trial AI. They will make labeling mandatory.
